Before I started doing these countdowns from the 1960's, I was certainly familiar with all the Beatles tunes and knew most of the Top 10 songs from the 1960's but really didn't know most of the non-Top 10 hits and doing these countdowns has certainly helped fill in the gaps for me personally (and I hope for others, as well).
As far as my style for presenting the countdowns that comes out of one of the last two radio stations I worked for in the late 1980's and early '90's. They both told me to shorten my talk breaks to 30 seconds or less--since people listen for the music and not to hear DJ's chatter on endlessly. So I learned to keep my 'chatter' down to a minimum and I try to think of what I would want to hear if I am sitting on the listening side of the 'radio'.
And again a big THANK YOU to the 'staff' at WBME and all of you who listen.

It showed a way "suits" think to this day - radio can survive without its personalities. Although radio goes on just barely (in small markets especially) today, it only does due to computer/satellite tricks. The suits are mainly unaffected until the time they can cut no more. True, the best of radio have had to find other ways to make it, Jeff, you and I are examples. I applaud Jeff and his expertise are worth many times over what he is getting. I hope it is a stepping stone to what he deserves, as he is making radio the way it should be!

Adam-- Actually the number of local radio stations with DJ's actually began to dry up in the late '80's and early '90's and that , in my opinion, was what forced a lot of us out of the business. As you indicate , satellite and computers have replaced most of the personalities who worked in all sized markets and brought a sameness to radio, sort of the way McDonald's and Walmart put most mom and pop shops out of business. The other thing that changed the face of radio was the big companies (Clear Channel) that gobbled up a lot of the stations across the country and programmed them all out of one central location--which of course killed any 'local' feel that radio once had.
I am most grateful for many of the streams,WBME among others, that attempt to keep a certain era of radio (and music) alive--but I know that even internet radio has taken a hit over the last few years and sadly I see that continuing in the future.
I wish you, Jeff and Tom all the best as you try to keep alive personality driven radio and an era of music that is getting harder and harder to find.
Joe, well said, my friend. Speaking of Tom, his "Gold Rush" is aptly named. It is that level of quality and if anybody worth a "hill of beans" in an upper management network position heard that show and if Tom wanted to syndicate it nationally, it would beat a whole lot of what's being offered. His kind of show and what James Murphy has created would really shake up the monotony (or moronity) of what's going on now in radio at all levels. The "suits" seem afraid of taking any chance on shows they don't own or control. In the current climate of "Radio", Casey and Don probably wouldn't have got AT40 off the ground amid the stories of it being created by a "mom and pop" shop (Watermark) and how it lost money the first year or two. One of the best radio programs in history wouldn't have made it today.
Right now, the radio business is traded like "Monopoly" property. Who can collect the most?
Listening to AT40 now from sometime in 1984 apparently, and someone edited the end of hour themes on to the broadcast.

Started at 5:55 Eastern Casey's Top 40 8-24-96. I guess 5-4-96 wasn't the last CT40. We'll see if the 10-13-79 Weekly Top 30 or ACC of 8-3-96 airs next. BTW is there anyplace to see the playlists of the Weekly Top 30 as I like to know what's next as I listen.
Great to hear the first National show to try and compete with Casey--Weekly Top 30. Unfortunately, the show never really got enough stations to carry it and it ended after 2 and a half years. It did lead to all the countdown shows that came about in the 1980's.
The one thing I really enjoyed about the show was the production values of the show were spectacular--but I always thought the chart was not as good as Billboard.

Yeah Joe, I hated their "countdown computer" Seemed like they made it up as they went along!
Not sure how I missed things, oh well. As it was once said: SURPRISE SURPRISE!
Also, if we go out, We are expecting VERY strong thunderstorms... There's even a tornado warning. Hopefully they're wrong (as usual) but if not, that's probably why.
Yeah the 'countdown computer' was a very sneaky way of getting around having to pay for the rights to any national chart. If you look carefully at their chart it came closest to matching the R & R chart most weeks (which makes sense since they were trying to get radio stations to pick up the program as an alternative to AT40). Of course they say the chart was an 'average' of the national trades (available at the time) but most of the #1's match the R & R Top 40 chart. Hmmmm
I was just listening to AT40 from 05/17/1986 - when John Mellencamp´s rain on the scarecrow played the stream went offline - 08.21h Okay i´ve been too impatient - stream is back up
08.51h now the stream is down again after the first hour of 5/17/86 show "CFN Europe style" - has anybody else the same problems??!

I clearly heard to my surprise the CFN Europe jingle at the end of Hour1. Don´t know if Jeff had ever contact to CFN/Olaf Guillaume how else the jingle came into that show on WBME!?? But without CFN on Astra 19,2 satellite in Europe I probably never found out about the old Casey Kasem shows here in Germany. I´m still grateful that Olaf put it on CFN´s schedule.
