Jeff, I enjoy all of your MERC shows, particularly the weekly countdowns. And I must say I was glued to the computer with this week in general.
And here are my reasons:
Hour 1. Dino and Frank in the same hour! (I was expecting some Sammy but no such luck!) 3 great bonus tracks! Hearing Tommy James and The Shondells' "Gettin' Together" may have borrowed/sampled from "Gimme Some Lovin'" the year before. Makes you think!
Hour 2. Some irony to start off. The Mamas & The Papas are at #27 to begin the hour followed by Peter, Paul, & Mary who talk about The Mamas & The Papas in the song at #26! Loved the B-side Spotlight! Was "Requiem For The Masses" about honoring soldiers who died in the Vietnam War or was it anti-war, which was very common in music and pop culture at the time? Whatever you think, it is a great song! Love the drums in this one! The #19 artist is last name (Jackie) Wilson follow by #18 who is first name Wilson (Pickett)! "Brown Eyed Girl": absolutely an over-played oldie! But it would not be so if the story you about its original intent was followed. It's safe to say Morrison made a good choice here. And the #1 Flashback from 1957, between two girls you chose "Diana" over "Tammy"! Hmmmmmmm . . . (Just joking!)
Hour 3. Another irony to start off. The A-side is one position lower than the B-side! The first bonus track---great choice! Bob Seger & The Last Heard is hugely underrated! Thanks for playing them.
Overall, this was a great countdown for this week! Lots of variety in the music!
Now I must be picky. (Sorry) It was Davie Allen & The Arrows who began the countdown, not Dave Allen. And, according to multiple sources, the second bonus track is titled "Any Wednesday", not just "Wednesday". Still a great selection by The Royal Guardsmen and I'm glad you included it in your show!
Yes, those are super picky, but . . .
(Oh, boy!) Jeff, Jeff, Jeff . . . I print your name not once, twice, but thrice for misidentifying Jay & The Americans as the artists for "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie"! You did this during the intro, outro, and later when you id'ed the artists who dropped out of the top 10 that week. No, no, no . . . it was Jay & The Techniques, of course, who had this great song and two others that would hit the top 40!
Jeff, as always, thanks for bringing back the MERC and for all the great help from your staff, WBME, and Rewind Central. Looking forward to many more great shows including the Genesis special next week!
Robert
