Unless I've missed it the record for fall from #1 on the Hot 100 is Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing" & Dionne Warwick A The Spinners' "Then Came You" which fell from #1 to #15 on back-to-back weeks of 10/26/74 & 11/2/74. What I noticed here is that last weeks #1 "Fishin' In The Dark" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band falls from #1 to #19 has there been a bigger drop from #1?

What I noticed here is that last weeks #1 "Fishin' In The Dark" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band falls from #1 to #19 has there been a bigger drop from #1? You need to get your hands on the book "Joel Whitburn's Country Annual" covering the years 1944-1997 (I think this book has not been updated past 1997). It is unbelievable some of the shenanigans that were going on concerning the country charts between 1980 and 1989. The biggest drop during the 80's from #1 was "You Don't Know Me" by Mickey Gilley which was #1 on 09/19/81 and then fell to #47 the following week. Two other songs in 1981 fell from #1 to #43 the following week. 1981 also had 6 songs drop from #1 to 30, 31, 33, or 34. 1982 had a song drop to #'s 38 and 32. The biggest dropper of 1987 wasn't the one you mentioned, it was "Somewhere Tonight" by Highway 101 which was #1 on 12/26/87 and also 01/03/88 (the frozen week) and then dropped to #21. There were a total of 3 songs that dropped from #1 to #19 in 1987. Casey talked about this a little in the 06/27/81 show and it was commented on the AT40 proboards 1980's thread quite a bit that weekend starting on page 1267 (06/27/15) towards the bottom of the page if you want to read some more on it. One more oddity - "Blessed Are the Believers" by Anne Murray dropped from #1 on 06/27/81 to #11 and then completely off the Top 100 chart the next week. In January of 1990 the Country charts returned to some normalcy when Billboard made the comment "01/20/1990: Billboard begins compiling Country chart through their BDS system (a computerized airplay monitoring system)." My impression is that radio stations were telling Billboard in their weekly radio survey that a song was no longer receiving airplay once a song hit #1 to dramatically increase the number of songs hitting #1.

Here are some more interesting 80's country stats:
Multi-week #1's per year: 79=13, 80=7, 81=5, 82=5, 83=2, 84=2, 85=2, 86=1, 87=2, 88=4, 89=3, 90=13. 1986 takes the cake because you have to remember that there was a frozen week in each of these years.
Songs that dropped from #1 to #2. 80=0, 81=0, 82=5, 83=2, 84=1, 85=0, 86=0, 87=1, 88=1, 89=2, 90=7

Wow so it sounds like if you fell from #1 to #2 you were lucky & I'm guessing no songs returned to #1. I used to read the AT40 proboards until I got banned.

It was my fault I thought it would be nice to let those that wanted to listen know. I've found another site that lists what shows air on the weekend Premiere schedule anyway this one even gives links to the stations to listen on.

Wow so it sounds like if you fell from #1 to #2 you were lucky & I'm guessing no songs returned to #1. I used to read the AT40 proboards until I got banned. Of the 12 songs that fell from 1 to 2 in the 80's, the highest rank in the following week was #4 (1-2-4-9-21). One song from 1989, "Come From the Heart" by Kathy Mattea, hung around in the top 20 the longest after falling from 1 to 2 - it went 1-2-6-8-10-13-19-23. The other 10 songs fell out of the top 20 relatively quickly. No song fell out of the #1 position and then returned to #1 between 1975 (Rhinestone Cowboy-Glen Campbell) and 1993 (Ain't Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up-Garth Brooks). Here are some of the patterns for some of the songs that had 2 or more weeks at #1: 1-1-1-3-41 Coward of the County-Kenny Rogers 1980 1-1-1-5-10-37 My Heart-Ronnie Milsap 1980
1-1-1-6-13-46 Lookin for Love-Johnny Lee 1980 1-1-4-6-55 My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys-Willie Nelson 1980 1-1-34-43 Love in the First Degree - Alabama 1981 1-1-8-18-60 There's No Getting Over Me - Ronnie Milsap 1981 1-1-31-62 Never Been So Loved - Charley Pride 1981 1-1-43-58 Feels So Right - Alabama 1981 1-1-2-7-17-24-29-37-52 Always on My Mind - Willie Nelson 1982 1-1-3-15-29-41 She Got the Goldmine - Jerry Reed 1982 1-1-2-7-14-20-35-36-43 Islands in the Stream - Rogers/Parton 1983 1-1-3-17-24-47 To All the Girls I've Loved Before - Iglesias/Nelson 1984 1-1-10-19-31-43 Lost in the Fifties Tonight - Ronnie Milsap 1985 1-1-1-6-14-24-37-49 Forever and Ever, Amen - Randy Travis 1987 1-1-2-15-27-39-39-56 I'll Leave This World Loving You - Ricky Van Shelton 1988 Casey made the comment in the 06/27/81 show that the Country charts had had a new #1 each of the 26 weeks so far in 1981, and he was laughing.

They have a 4 part show of the Top 40 acts of the 20th Century copied from the radio from the last week of 1999 but one of the label Nazis made a claim to the 3rd hour & it's blocked sadly.

Gotta look. I might have that.
If not, is that hour still there? Blocked or removed. I'd just need the URL to convert.
I did get the 87 show. I'll be adding it.
