I'm sitting here listening to the 2-23-08 show, from 13 years ago, here in 2021. I'm really enjoying it so far! It truly feels like 2008 wasn't so long ago.
Twenty years ago, back in 2001, I remember listening to an AT40 Flashback show from 1988 (probably for the first time,) thinking it was so long ago and songs from 1988 were oldies.
The older you get, the feel of 13 years really changes...but a Casey Kasem countdown lives on forever! Thanks for including AT20 from the 2000s in your programming, WGXX!

On the last show, I never thought I hear one of those OnStar ads with the recorded emergency situations. Those ads were used to demonstrate how OnStar works to potential subscribers on their new Corvettes, Hummers, etc. Hopefully the ads convinced them to shell out the $25 monthly fee.

Has anyone else noticed how much Casey seems to love Boy George? The group is Culture Club but he says "Boy George" every chance he gets. The story on this show about the grandmas is really good though!

I felt like buying a new house after yesterday’s show thanks to Kasem’s RE/MAX ads and those of the National Association of Realtors.
Also never expected to hear Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul” on AT20 but it must have done well on Hot AC.

Anybody have memories of June 13, 2008? If only I could hear "New Soul" by Yael Naim on the radio somewhere....

A couple segments skipped in today's show song #14 was cut short to go to the next segment & song #13 cut short missing a LDD song #12 & an extra to go to the next segment. I'm guessing it won't be replayed but couple I get those segments & post the show in the messages?

I'm guessing it won't be replayed but couple I get those segments & post the show in the messages? Thanks for the alert, I didn't catch that when I was editing. If I have the missing stuff, I will check and post something later about it. EDIT: My copy is not all there, major apologies!

I took some ambition & used the 6/7/08 show & with a different LDD & extra created what the songs might have sounded like. I'll send a message with both vesions to compare.

July 28, 2007 was a real treat. My father Robert sent in the LDD in honor of his 65th birthday (It's Still Rock & Roll To Me.) Today, he's celebrating a happy 79th birthday, but he's not really getting out to many Air Supply concerts anymore.

I noticed in the tease for the Aerosmith extra Casey said American Top 10 instead of American Top 20 (Oops you'd thought they'd caught that). I also noticed that the last America's Top Hits Alone by Heart is missing.

I also noticed that the last America's Top Hits Alone by Heart is missing. My AT20 copy didn't contain the Heart cut...should've checked the AT10 from same week to see if it was there as I've done before. Oh well maybe I'll find it Sat at 5pm EDIT: can't do this except for 1998-2004 shows.

I guess AT10 was a no to the Heart extra? I wish every once in a while you'd play AT10 instead of AT20 as I like the spotlights on the AT10 shows not to mention less Nickelback, the other faux rock acts & Idol M.I.A.'s

Poor Coldplay first they're voted best act to make you sleepy (well deserved) & then if that's not bad enough they get the Pimp Slap on their candy asses by Jigga, Pimp C & Bun-B after the countdown.

Because this is "AT20", even if not the one with the series... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ODD BULLET BEHAVIOR: Edwin McCain, Aerosmith, and George Benson, all with their modest little spin gains (only Aerosmith gained over 100, and not by much), each got shoved back a notch by the brand new "I'm Your Angel" (+745, which is over one-fourth of #1's spin total), while LeAnn Rimes got shoved right out of the countdown! But she gained just +2, thus she fell back behind John Mellencamp and the debuting Bette Midler (who gained just 20s and 30s).
Speaking of Bette and George, this would be the last countdown appearance for the both of them (the last non-Christmas appearance, anyway - for Bette, I'm never sure as to the extent of what Christmas songs may have made it into AC countdowns before they'd shut down for the holidays). This was her first appearance since 1992 and his first since 1985 (he had a Top 10 AC hit that year with "I Just Wanna Hang Around You").
On first glance, I was surprised to see "My Father's Eyes" still here - but in fact, it's one of three hits who are still here from the Casey's Countdown days! Of the three, only "Truly Madly Deeply" had been counted down by Casey before he left Westwood One - both Eric and the third, "You're Still the One", debuted the week he left (2/28), while at 40 weeks, Savage Garden would have debuted on 1/31 (the week they also hit #1 on CT40).
It also turns out that "My Father's Eyes" was an R&R-only #1 - he managed to steal a pair of weeks from "Truly Madly Deeply" here, but on Billboard, they shut him out.
Despite its already-long CHR and Hot AC runs by this point, "I'll Be" was just getting started here, ostensibly due to its being "Hot". And owing to its backwards bullet, it definitely wasn't peaking - not sure where it ended up, but on Billboard it'd reach #6. The same "Hot" considerations apply to Aerosmith, though they wouldn't go as high as Edwin.
Speaking of them, kind of an odd decision to repeat a verse on "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" - but at least it shows that each show had its own production considerations, I guess? By that, I mean that it wasn't touched on AT40 this week.
I will also note that the studio version of "I Will Remember You" went Top 10 on Casey's Countdown at the end of 1995/beginning of 1996, and ranked #47 for 1996.
That "Wicked Game" story should sound familiar - Casey told a condensed version of it for this same song as one of Casey's Biggest Hits for the Top 100 of 1997.
ALSO SOUNDING FAMILIAR: The ABC story he told for "Be Near Me" - he told it at least twice during AT40's original run, on 11/27/82 and 10/12/85 (which means yes, he told it during the song's own original chart run!).
On the subject of superstars still having countdown hits in 1998: We also just missed having Rod Stewart's last trip to AT40 earlier this year. (We got 8/1, the week "Ooh La La" dropped out.) He'd continue having AT20 and then AT10 hits, though, through the first third or so of 2007.
Speaking of 8/1, though, that's the week where "From This Moment On" went to #1 on the Country chart.
The second and third LDDs were switched in order vis-a-vis AT40.
"True Colors" sports some unusual suspects for a Phil Collins recording: It's perhaps fitting that it comes after the "Change the World" LDD, as Babyface produced both, while playing on drums for Phil's record is Sheila E.
"Listen to Your Heart" was actually almost an AC countdown #1 as well - but it would be leapfrogged by the same song heard later as an America's Top Hit, "Angelia". (That didn't happen until November, though.)
"I'll Never Break Your Heart", indeed: Both versions of this song's video feature members of the group paired with then-girlfriends who have since become their wives. For the original (international) video, this happened with Kevin Richardson, while for the U.S. video, it happened with Brian Littrell.

Top 60 of 2006 insight (the debut for this show):
*Rob Thomas lands with “Streetcorner Symphony” (#60) and “Ever the Same” (#4). Still was surprised by the latter’s appearance on the main AT40 and WT40 year end charts despite it never appearing on their regular charts.
*Michael Bublé lands with “Home” (#59). Remembered a promotion where the single was given out free with a minimum purchase at Hallmark’s Gold Crown stores.
*Christina Aguilera lands with “Ain’t No Other Man” (#57). This track first aired on (at the time) Rhythmic station WOCQ (now a CHR/Pop station) as an “exclusive” to that station.
*Scottish singer KT Tunstall lands with “Suddenly I See” (#54) and “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” (#5). The latter I first heard when it was a Breakout track on the Hot AC AT40. The former I remembered from Walmart TV ads in 2007.
*U2’s 1987 song “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For” was played as an Extra. Fugees member Pras Michel made a cover of the song simply titled “Haven’t Found” in 2005, which peaked at #17 in Finland and at #36 on R&R’s CHR chart (although I don’t remember hearing that version outside of mix shows).
*Carlos Santana and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler land with “Just Feel Better” (#53). It is from Santana’s 20th album All That I Am, which also featured the track I mentioned on an earlier AT40 insight, “I’m Feeling You”, featuring The Wreckers (Michelle Branch’s country duo).
*Gwen Stefani of No Doubt lands with “Cool” (#52), from her debut solo album Love, Angel, Music, Baby (L.A.M.B.). Several tracks on the album, including the mentioned “Rich Girl” and her debut “What You Waiting For” mention the Harajuku Girls (who also have a self-titled track on the album), a group of Japanese backup dancers Stefani commissions on her videos and concerts. Each of the girls were named after the 4 parts of the album’s name. Those girls even had a Nick Jr. animated series, Kuu Kuu Harajuku (loosely based on Stefani’s teen years).
*Rock band Augustana land with “Boston” (#50). It gained popularity after appearing on the Season 3 finale of One Tree Hill.
*Sheryl Crow and Sting land with their duet “Always On Your Side” (#49). It was originally a solo track on her album Wildflower before being converted into a duet for the single release. Future pressings of the album featured the duet version. Sting’s band The Police also landed as an Extra with their 1985 song “King of Pain”.
*James Blunt lands with “High” (#48) and “You’re Beautiful” (#6). The latter was a #1 track on Hot AC for a few weeks, before crossing over to CHR earlier in 2006, ending up in the Top 5.
*Collective Soul’s 1995 song “December” was played as an Extra. It was a #1 track on the rock charts and a Top 10 on CHR that year.
*Shakira and Wyclef land with “Hips Don’t Lie” (#47). This was #1 for that year on the main AT40. It peaked at #18 on the Hot AC AT40 during the summer.
*O.A.R. lands with “Love and Memories” (#46). The band’s name is an acronym for “Of a Revolution”.
*INXS lands with “Pretty Vegas” (#42). It was their first single with new vocalist JD Fortune, who won the position on the CBS show Rock Star: INXS. He left the band in 2011.
*Rihanna lands with her Hot AC debut “SOS (Rescue Me)” (#41). None of my local Hot AC stations (WCZT, at the time WAYV and WSJO) played this until it peaked at #20 on the Hot AC AT40.
*British singer Corinne Bailey Rae lands with “Put Your Records On” (#40). Jack Ritter, under the name Ritt Momney, covered the track last year, which was successful thanks to it’s use on a makeup tutorial on TikTok.
*Gorillaz land with “Feel Good Inc.” (#38). Two versions were used on radio: the uncut album version (which a lot of CHR stations used) and this radio edit, which cuts the laughing intro completely and the laugh track after the second verse also cut in half.
*Blondie’s 1980 song “Call Me” was played as an Extra. They obtained the name after truck drivers catcalled to frontwoman Debbie Harry “Hey, blondie!”. They remain together to this day, after first breaking up in 1982, then reuniting in 1997. Gothic metal band In This Moment covered the song in 2009.
*Australian country singer Keith Urban lands with “You’ll Think of Me” (#30). It was a #1 on the Billboard country chart for 2 weeks. It was also a Top 10 on Hot AC.
*Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel lands as an Extra with his 1986 song “In Your Eyes”. His follow-up track, “Big Time”, was popularized in 2006 after being used as the theme song for WrestleMania 22.
*John Ondrasnik’s Five for Fighting lands with “The Riddle” (#23). This track, after numerous rewrites, was inspired by Ondrasnik’s relationship with his son.
*Nickleback land with “Far Away” (#20), “Photogr*ph” (#9) and “Savin’ Me” (#7). Their 2001 #1 track “How You Remind Me” was played during a ATH segment, in which Kasem tells a piece on how the band got it’s name.
*The Goo Goo Dolls land with “Better Days” (#18). Their 1999 #1 Hot AC track “Slide” was played as an Extra.
*Mariah Carey’s 2005 track “We Belong Together” was played as an extra. This spent 10 weeks at #1 on CHR and 14 (non-consecutive) weeks at #1 of the Hot 100. It was also the #1 for 2005 on R&R’s Rhythmic chart as well as on the Hot 100 and Billboard’s R&B/Hip-hop year-end charts.
*Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse, collectively known as Gnarls Barkley, landed with “Crazy” (#13). Hard to believe this appeared on CHR, Rhythmic and Hot AC stations at the same time.
*Dire Straits’ 1985 song “Money for Nothing” appears as an Optional Extra. The track received criticism for it’s second verse being homophobic, in which it was altered in live performances of the song.
*Bon Jovi lands with “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” (#11). This is the version featuring Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, which was released for country radio. It was originally to feature Keith Urban but namesake Jon Bon Jovi decided that Urban’s voice was too similar to his own and he wanted a female vocalist, leading to Nettles being chosen instead.
*Lifehouse lands with their #1 track “You and Me” (#10). It hit the top and stayed for a few weeks during mid-2005.
*Madonna’s 2005 single “Hung Up” was played as an Extra. It samples the 1979 ABBA single “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”. It was also a #1 in several countries, including the European Hot 100 as well as on global dance charts.
*Natasha Bedingfield lands with “Unwritten” (#3), also the name of her debut album. In the Americas, her debut “Single” was actually the follow-up to this track in the region, 2 years after it’s release.
*The Fray land the #1 for 2006 with “Over My Head (Cable Car)”, from the album of the title follow-up track “How To Save a Life” (#26). The latter gained popularity after an appearance on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

1/3/04 insight:
*Seal falls one with “Waiting For You” (#20). It was the final single from his 4th album Seal IV, which was released after a more “mainstream-sounding” planned album (Togetherland) was scCrapped.
*Jason Mraz moves up 2 with “You & I Both” (#18). It is a follow up to his debut single “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)”, which was a Top 5 on Hot AC.
*Train’s 1999 track “Meet Virginia” was played as an Extra. This was a Top 10 on CHR and peaked at #2 on Hot AC. They also have 2 consecutive tracks on the chart: “Calling All Angels” (#12) and “When I Look to the Sky” (#11).
*Had no idea Imodium AD, a medicine used for diarrhea, had ads on radio, even using their famous “the pink stuff” (Pepto-Bismol) comparison. Also found it funny that it got preceded by a NyQuil ad, another medicine used for cold and flu symptoms.
*Kasem tells a piece on the Hundred Years War, a battle between the French and the English kingdoms from 1337-1453. The war became the most significant conflict during the Middle Ages, it being divided by 3 phases: The Carolinian War, the Edwardian War and the Lancastrian War. France declared victory after the appearance of Joan of Arc during the Siege of Orleans, who would boost the morale of French soldiers.
*John Ondrasnik’s Five for Fighting debuts “100 Years” (#16). That would later be his last track to date on CHR (peaking at #35 on R&R’s CHR chart).
*Michelle Branch moves up 2 with “Breathe” (#14). Her album Hotel Paper has several themes, including independence, spirituality, moving on and leaving things behind among many others.
*The Clash’s 1982 song “Rock The Casbah” was played as an Extra. This peaked at #8 on the Hot 100 and on Dance. Actor/Crapper Will Smith later sampled the song in his 2000 New Years anthem “Will 2K”.
*Live holds with “Heaven” (#13) for the 4th consecutive week. Had no idea they were often mispronounced with the pronounciation of the verb meaning of the word “live”.
*Kasem tells a piece on 10K Maniacs moving to Britain for a couple years after their initial singles sold more successfully in the UK than in their native US. Their 1993 acoustic cover of Patti Smith’s 1978 song “Because the Night” was played as an Extra.
*As I mentioned a while back, these OnStar ads (taken from actual situations) are meant to demonstrate how the service is used to lure those that drive GM cars to subscribe to the service. For a period of time (2011-14), they also sold rear view mirrors with their systems for non-GM cars, which were “succeeded” last year by a mobile app called OnStar Guardian, which provided their emergency features.
*Barenaked Ladies (BNL) move up 1 with “Another Postcard” (#10). This had a reggae-r*p style, which was consistent of earlier BNL tracks.
*Matchbox 20 falls 2 with “Unwell” (#9), while also holding with the follow-up “Bright Lights” (#3). They are from their 2002 album More Than Think You Are, which also spawned “Disease”.
*Kasem tells a piece on critics labeling The Romantics in the new wave genre, despite the band denying that they’re “new wave”, stating that they’re similar to earlier rock styles. Their 1983 song “Talking In Your Sleep” was played as an Extra.
*George Michael’s 1987 song “Faith” was played as an Extra. This was his 3rd #1 in the US.
*No Doubt moves up 1 with their cover of the 1984 Talk Talk song “It’s My Life” (#7). It was the sole new track from their greatest hits album The Singles 1992-2003, which also spawned a remix of their 2000 single “Bathwater” by guitarist Tom Dumont’s side project Invincible Overlord (despite the original being used for the album).
*Macy Gray’s 2000 #1 track “I Try” was played as the final LDD. It was requested by an juvenile inmate after her significant other (a fellow inmate) could not get released the same day as her.
*Sarah McLachlan falls 1 with “Fallen” (#6). The original version of “I Will Remember You” was played as the 1st LDD, which is one of the many tracks to be most-requested for these.
*Third Eye Blind’s 1999 Top 5 track “Jumper” was played as an Extra.
*A special version of “The First Cut Is The Deepest” (#5) was used, consisting of a blended medley of Cat Stevens’ original 1967 version alongside Keith Hampshire’s, Rod Stewart’s and Sheryl Crow’s cover versions. This was also used on Kasem’s final AT40, which fell on this same week.
*Dido holds with “White Flag” (#4). Named after the symbol of surrender, it tells a story of a woman not willing to give up after a failed relationship.
*Kasem tells a piece on Denzel Foster and Thomas McElroy leaving Club Nouveau in 1988 to become producers, later creating the sucessful R&B group En Vogue. Their 1987 cover of the 1972 Bill Withers song “Lean on Me” was played as an Extra.
*OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” (serving it’s “4th week” (technically 2nd) at #1 on AT40) was mentioned during Kasem’s “#1 on other charts” piece. It was #27 on Hot AC at the time.

1/8/05 insight:
*Chicano rock band Los Lonely Boys fall 2 with “More Than Love” (#20). They consisted of brothers Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza. The band is in an indefinite hiatus after the departure of Jojo Garza. It is also the follow-up to “Heaven” (#14), which was their debut on CHR.
*Green Day debut “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (#19), their first track since their 1998 single “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”. Can’t say for Hot AC but this was definitely their first on CHR (Their 2000 single “Minority” didn’t even make the Top 40 on the latter format but DID make Dees’ CHR chart for 1-2 weeks in January 2001).
*John Mellencamp and India.Arie’s 2002 single “Peaceful World” was played as an Extra. It deals with issues regarding prejudice and race.
*The Killers fall 1 with their second single “Somebody Told Me” (#18). A re-release of their debut single “Mr. Brightside” was their “third” single after this track appeared on the CHR and Hot AC charts.
*Kasem tells a piece on Faith Hill feeling that she “made it” after seeing an impersonator successfully impersonating her in a drag nightclub. Her 2000 single “Breathe”, which was #1 for that year on the Hot 100, was played as an Extra.
*Nelly and Hill’s spouse Tim McGraw move up 2 with “Over and Over Again” (#17). This was Nelly’s first and sole Hot AC track, owing to it’s country-style sound.
*Mr. Mister’s 1985 single “Broken Wings” was played as an Extra. It spent 2 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100.
*Smash Mouth’s 2000 Top 10 track “Then The Morning Comes” was played as an Extra. It was a follow up to their 1999 #1 track “All-Star”.
*Hoobastank hold with “Disappear” (#16). It is a follow-up to their first and only #1 single “The Reason” (#13), which is also the name of their album both tracks are in.
*10K Maniacs’ 1993 track “Because The Night” was played as an Extra (for the second consecutive show here). This was when Natalie Merchant was still in the group. Their 1997 track “More Than This”, with new (and current) vocalist Mary Ramsey, had a remix by Todd Terry (meant for Rhythmic radio) which was used in the video by Geffen (their label) WITHOUT the band’s consent.
*Barenaked Ladies’ 1999 single “It’s All Been Done” was played as an Extra. Kasem stated that BNL often changed their lyrics for live concerts, even having an online database dedicated to them.
*South African rock band Seether and Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee move up 2 with “Broken” (#12). It was from the soundtrack to the 2004 film The Punisher, based on the Marvel character.
*Avril Lavigne holds with her Top 10 track “My Happy Ending” (#11). It is from her 2nd album Under My Skin, which had a more rock-metal sound than her debut album Let Go.
*U2 hold with “Vertigo” (#10). This is their last Top 40 track on CHR to date, peaking much lower at #33.
*Kasem tells a piece on Natalie Imbruglia expressing both desire and regret for recording her 1998 single “Torn” (played as an Extra), owing to it’s success on the CHR charts (11 weeks at #1). She tries to avoid performing the track in concerts but couldn’t do so as it was a fan favorite.
*Bowling for Soup holds with “1985” (#9). It was originally recorded by SR-71 but the band covered it after frontman Jaret Reddick obtained permission to do so, with SR-71 frontman Mitch Allan even recommending it.
*Hootie and The Blowfish’ 1996 single “Time” was played as an Extra. It was from their debut album Cracked Rear View, which sold 21M copies in the US.
*Ryan Cabrera holds with “On The Way Down” (#8). The video of this track featured his then-girlfriend Ashlee Simpson, sister of Jessica Simpson, playing as his love interest.
*Christian rock band Switchfoot falls 1 with “Dare You To Move” (#7). They were named after a surfing term meaning to change footing on a surfboard to get a new perspective.
*Lenny Kravitz moves up 1 with “Lady” (#6). It was widely thought that it was written about Nicole Kidman, his then-girlfriend. It is also his last Top 40 track to date on CHR (peaking at #24).
*Finger Eleven falls 1 with “One Thing” (#5). It peaked at #2 on Hot AC and #10 on CHR.
*Kelly Clarkson moves up 1 with “Breakaway” (#4). It’s from the soundtrack to the 2004 Disney film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which received negative reception. A third film is planned but is on indefinite hold due to director Garry Marshall’s 2016 death.
*Kasem tells a piece on Bruce Springsteen’s art collection, which included paintings of himself, a dog and martial artist Bruce Lee. His 1980 single “Hungry Heart” was played as an extra.
*Maroon 5 holds with their former #1 “She Will Be Loved” (#3). This was their third single from their album Songs About Jane, which maintains a following due to mixed reception of their current pop sound.
*John Mayer leaves the #1 slot after only a week with “Daughters” (#2). It was the third single from his album Heavier Things, the other 2 being “Bigger Than My Body” and “Clarity”. Also interesting to see his 2008 single “Say” headed to recurrent on CHR for “no apparent reason”.
*Kasem tells a piece on The Goo Goo Dolls’ cover of the 1977 Supertramp single “Give A Little Bit” (1st week at #1), which was written by Supertramp co-frontman Roger Hodgson at the age of 19, who presented it to the band years later, after initially thinking it wouldn’t be successful. The original song peaked at #15 on the Hot 100 and #12 on Cashbox Magazine’s Top 100.

On this date in time, in 2008, Casey read my LDD tribute to Dan Fogelberg. I have not heard it in 14 years.

It must have been the thrill of a lifetime for you and your dad to have a dedication read by the legendary Casey Kasem. Hope you still have the CD Casey sent you, maybe he autogr aphed it? What a treasure!

It must have been the thrill of a lifetime for you and your dad to have a dedication read by the legendary Casey Kasem. Hope you still have the CD Casey sent you, maybe he autogCraphed it? What a treasure! Believe it or not, my Dad and I had FOUR LDDs read by Casey Kasem between 2006-2008 - so it was a thrill of a lifetime, four times over! For me personally, the Dan Fogelberg LDD played today, probably was my favorite, and I truly was inspired by the snow turning to rain as I wrote it (Dan's lyrics.) Never got the CD copy, so hearing it today was very special. 7/29/07 - It's Still Rock and Roll to Me - played last July and I commented above. 1/20/08 - Leader of the Band - played today. Thank you so much! 2/3/06 - Stuck With You - any chance you have this episode queued up for early February? 7/25/08 - Thank You (Dido) - my Dad wrote this as a tribute to my Grandmother, who passed away in 2008

The CD I was referring to was America's Top Hits he said he was sending a copy. Did you get that?

4 LDD's in 2 years I wonder if that tells of the low listenership or the low number of people sending in dedications of songs that fit the Hot AC format. But wow 3 LDD's is a years span by the 2nd they must've been waiting for your next letter. I know Fogelberg was popular here because he was from about 100 miles north in Peoria Illinois.
