Hello, Let me first off say 'thank you' to WBME for allowing me to share my 'hobby' of playing the hits. You will notice the first show that runs (Top 100 of 1979) was recorded in AT40 style (generally two songs from the countdown per segment). There should be a few weekly shows, in the future, that feature just the Top 40 from a particular week from the Cash Box charts and they are closer in format to the MERC.
If you have any comments about the Countdowns please post them here--since I don't have a facebook page for the show(s).
By the way, just to let you know Cash Box was a rival trade publication to Billboard (AT40's chart), which published weekly charts from the mid 1940's to the mid 1990's. Cash Box began more as a song oriented chart (similar to the radio program Your Hit Parade), just reflecting sales of songs (or records) until they added airplay to their charts in the late 1970's. Up through the mid 1960's Cash Box used to dump all the versions of a particular song into one position on their chart--reflecting the idea (like Your Hit Parade) that the song was more important than the artist. Of course, when the rock era really kicked in, less and less artists recorded the same songs which lead to the demise of the one chart position for multiple artists with the same song.
I look forward to reading the feedback.
Enjoy!
Joe

I am really enjoying the 1979 Cashbox Countdown so far (#72 is playing right now). Love the limited commercial interruption. I didn't think of it until this morning, but 1979 is one of the years when the AT40 Casey Kasem countdown was only a Top 50 (the 2nd week they played the Top 50 of the 1970's decade), so we are hearing quite a few songs not played by the AT40 year end countdown. I also like Joe's no-nonsense, just the songs format as a change of pace. Factoids are nice, of course, but it is the music that governs my decision as to whether I am going to tune in or not.

I very much like it as well. I like the stories, in doses, which is why I do a story for every 3 or 4 at the most.
There will be some weekly style ones coming up that are close to the date it will air.
That mixed with the 70's year ends.
I'm hoping he gets me more of both. I'd like it if he did at least 64-69 and 80-89 or at least the first half of the decade.
Maybe decade top 100's could be done!
But whatever he feels like doing is great!

I just finished some weekly countdowns from 1974-1981. I am in the planning stages of doing some additional countdowns from 1964-69 that will end with #1 songs that are unique to Cash Box (songs that reached #1 on Cash Box but not on Billboard). The biggest challenge to doing countdowns from the '60's are making sure you find original versions of the hits--and avoid those annoying re-recorded versions (not always easy to do).
Please keep the feedback coming about the countdowns.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe if there is any song you can't find, send me a message, I may have them. I usually transfer my original 45's to ensure they're original versions.

Joe, Great job on the show, I enjoyed the music and your delivery on the introductions. I really respect you and Jeff's attention to detail on the versions of songs you play on your countdowns.

Thanks, Adam. I know that my goal is to try and present the version of the song that was truly the 'hit' version to try to re-capture the flavor of listening to the show from that era. One other reason why I think we all enjoy listening to the countdown shows is you get an idea of what the competition for songs/singles was like in a any given week in pop music history. It's also interesting to hear songs that really don't get any more play these days versus the songs that still get played.

If I can, I'd like to request that you do the week in 1966 that Napolean XIV was at #1 with Coming to Take Me Away Ha Haaa.

I did a show from Sept 1966 but unfortunately (?) the song had fallen out of the Top 40. Of course, you could do it and feature it on your Sunday morning countdown--it might be a great way to lead into the program that follows yours (Ha-Haa!). By the way, the other show I plan on doing from 1966 is from April.

I only use Cashbox for the 80's or 70's weeks Casey didn't do. Otherwise it's Billboard.

I do play the song on the #1 chronological re-cap show, which you should have in about a week or so.

OK. I have shows that you gave me already inserted into the master schedule. Other weeks will have Year End style shows. At some point, I may run the #1 re-cap in 3-4 hour increments instead of a countdown. But I would want to do them all in a row.
I may also or instead, air it as a marathon during the week following Christmas, when I typically do marathons.

I was looking forward to these countdowns but, honestly, I find them unlistenable due to diversions from the actual countdown every 10 minutes and the WBME same old promos every 10 minutes. It's too bad becuase the show is pretty fun to listen to other than that. Please consider cutting it down to 2.5 hours and getting rid of the (Chinese water torture) WBME promos. Thank you.

What Doug doesn't understand is that we need to cross promote so that people are aware of the other shows.
We record new ones now and then to freshen it up and have weekly different ones, all of which get aired daily for that week only.
And on the days that shows run long, I actually let them and cancel out playing promos for the listeners...
And several shows, like The Cash Box Countdown, AT40 With Shadoe, Gold Rush and James Murphy's shows are made so that we air promos now and then...

And it's not much different from AT40 on a regular station. What with the same promos like Netflix and Total Transformation!!!!

Actually Premiere's new favorites are the seemingly endless "Flo" Progressive ads & the prostate ads that have the line "Men, are you waking up at night to pee" The iHeart channel now along with advertising it being the Classic AT40 Channel also promote the current AT40 (like anyone listening to the Classic Channel would want to hear Ryan Douchebag.

By the way, if you (or anyone reading this) have a certain week in pop music history you would like to have featured on the program (from 1964-1984)--please let me know. Thanks, Joe

Thanks Joe. I really like the show. What folks aren't grasping is that WBME is padding your show with the only thing it has...self promotion, because your hours are too short and the breaks too frequent, even more frequent that the old Casey shows. But it's not WBME's fault...they don't sell advertising and it's all they have to fill with. ...and unfortunately, it's repetitious. Thus is the substance of a "block" radio station, a station that plays different genres and shows and has to fit them into a "block" of time. I know...I use to work for such a station and timing is everything in radio. Sorry I'm not Dale Carnegie here but I'm trying to state my frustration with the current issue. WBME has done an incredible job of presenting shows with wide ranging formats and in highly commended. I love the MERC shows. I won't stop listening to the station or your show. Even though I find it, it its current format, unlistenable, for the reasons stated.

There are times we will fill time with music, but shows that are segmented by our staff to fit in promotion of other shows, so that listeners of one show know what else there is, will get promos during them. We make them as entertaining as we can, and switch them as often as we can for variety.

Just some ideas... not sure what you might like, or what fits in with your show... just some stuff I have in my library... Here goes... Dead Man's Blues by Jelly Roll Morton, Funeral March of a Marionette (Numerous orchestral versions of this I believe), Grim Grinning Ghosts from Walt Disney World Official Album, Great Pumpkin Waltz- Guaraldi and lastly Otherworldly Concerto by Gaylord Carter (my version is over 9m long, but there are probably shorter versions available). I'm fully aware that none of these are Top 40 songs, so they may be of no help to you... just talking out loud here... :-)

I like the idea of using Funeral March of a Marionette (Alfred Hitch TV theme music) as background music to talk over for the 'spooky' hits introduction; or I might use the Twilight Show theme music - I think I have Grim Grinning Ghosts (from the Disney theme parks) somewhere in my stuff, as well. I also plan on doing a couple of TV theme songs from the 60's as 'extras' as well.

Hitting two different eras how about Jim Stafford's lesser hit Swamp Witch & Hammers' Addams Groove from the Addams Family movie. Also a couple inspired by the Freddie Kruger movies the hit A Nightmare On My Street by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince & Are You Ready For Freddy by the Fat Boys. Finally a song I heard on R&B stations around Halloween in the 80's Freaks Come Out At Night by Whodini.

Not really a Halloween song but scarier than hell to me is DOA by Bloodrock. Yeah, D.O.A. is a pretty scary record--but I guess that was supposed to be the point. I am trying to stay in the 1960's since the countdown will feature a chart from that decade. I guess I could play Fire by Crazy Arthur Brown (that sounds like a pretty scary record). I always liked the wind machine ending the song. I wonder if John Lennon got the idea to end She's So Heavy from Abbey Road from that song?!
