Late shower thoughts on the 12-14-03 show: *Eamon’s “I Want You Back” (#33) is known for it’s excessive swearing. It was also a subject of a rumor that the track is about a singer named Frankee (who released a “response” song called “... You Right Back”) who people thought Eamon was dating. Eamon denied this, saying he never met nor ever dated Frankee (although it was his team that picked her for that track so he was involved in a way). *Kelis’ “Milkshake” debuts at #28! Not bad for a newcomer. I’m sure most of us remember Kelis from when she did this classic moment. *Nothing says “creative marketing” with kids singing about feeling sick to the tune of “If You’re Happy And You Know It” on those Simply Stuffy/Simply Cough (basically versions of Children’s Tylenol without the pain/fever relief) ads. *Kasem tells a piece on the effects of shaking a Polaroid picture during it’s development process and the fact that it DOES NOT speed up the process. I’m sure the Polaroid cameras/film were starting to decline in popularity but had a quick resurge thanks to OutKast!

I’m sure the Polaroid cameras/film were starting to decline in popularity but had a quick resurge thanks to OutKast! There was a question asked (don't remember if it was just on another board or from a media outlet) at that time which lyric people thought was the most clever. "Polaroid picture" won, but I didn't go for that because I thought they overpushed that in the video with showing all those people shaking Polaroid pictures the whole time. (My vote went to: "Lend me some sugar, I AM your neighbor!")

Anyone here who either has The Writing's on the Wall or has at least heard the album should recognize the segue that was left on at the end of "Say My Name". (On that album, each track has a "relationship commandment" spoken at its end that effectively introduces the next song. On another note, "Say My Name" was another surprise radio play in the year 2000. At that point, "Bills, Bills, Bills" had crossed over and had had a middling run on Pop radio, but I didn't really have any expectation that anything would follow, particularly as I was aware of its follow-up "Bug a Boo" which did nothing. Then, suddenly one day "Say My Name" gets played...! Oh...what is this? Is this another one of those dance remixes that gets forcibly grafted onto the countdown for its entire run (for "American Pie") because the metropolises (biggest of the biggest cities) insisted on it? "American Pie", incidentally, had the week's biggest spin gain (+1749), hardly surprising as it also debuted on the entire R&R chart at #34, moving into its first week of wide release. The biggest spin-gainer already on the chart is also not much of a surprise, as it's "Bye Bye Bye" (+1311). The week's biggest spin loss goes to "I Wanna Love You Forever", down -907...not that it matters much since this is her 20th week on the R&R chart (not counting holiday break), and therefore her final week. Sonique, the week's Biggest Mover, had the 7th-biggest spin gain this week (+636). Since Casey didn't read the droppers, those were: - "American Woman" by Lenny Kravitz (LW: 40, 20 weeks on; went recurrent on R&R),
- "Little Black Backpack" by Stroke 9 (LW: 38, 13 weeks on),
- "Shake Your Bon Bon" by Ricky Martin (LW: 35, 14 weeks on), and
- "Girl on TV" by LFO (LW: 34, 16 weeks on).
The first half of the countdown, or so, seems to come in groups - not really any large spins differences in the 40-34 range, the most is a couple of 100+ gaps. Then it's 300+ to get to #33, and 33-29 are all close together. Then it's another 300+ to get to #28, and 28-24 are all close together. Then it's a little less than 200 to get to #23, and 23-19 are all close together. I suspect this was the Pop mix of "Amazed", based on its arrangement - though it's never been clear to me which version is which. Or rather, I've never seen it identified as to which one is which. Somehow I suspect that that third America's Top Hit ("The Sign") is a sneak preview for next week. As we all know, of course, it'd be the second of three #1 hits on Shadoe's AT40 rather than one of two. Meanwhile, the last America's Top Hit ("The Living Years") IS a sneak preview for tomorrow's show. STOP AND GO: Yesterday, I listened to 6/29/91, which features Steelheart's "I'll Never Let You Go", whose first five weeks in June went like this: 39-34-34-26-26. Now, here in this countdown, we have "It Feels So Good", whose first five weeks go: 40-27-27-19-19. Sonique, of course, would peak much higher than Steelheart. Incidentally, her song was one of the more pleasant surprises in late 1999/early 2000 - I first heard it in late 99 on my station's late-night new music battle, thought it was nice, but wasn't sure if I'd hear it again. Then, she seemed to be trying to keep pace with "Bye Bye Bye" at first, as she debuted on the entire R&R chart the same week they did (right into the countdown), and had a double-digit leap in her second week (as they did). But then, of course, they kept going, while she was forced to stop and go for a bit. And on the subject of "never let you go"s...something with that title is responsible for one particular outbreak of this week's: ODD BULLET BEHAVIOR - Third Eye Blind's "Never Let You Go", that is. That gains over 700 spins and pushes forward 17-14, which in turn pushes "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart", "Take a Picture", and "All the Small Things", each gaining over 200, each back one. Incidentally, the teens (19-11 range) are very stilted this week. After #19, it's over 400 spins to #18, then over 500 to #17, then over 300 to #16. 16-13 are fairly close together, then it's nearly 300 spins to #12 and a little less than 200 to #11. And trying to get into the Top 10 may be even worse - another 400+ spins to get to #10, then over 700 to get to #9 and 400+ more to get to #8! And to make a long story short...(too late!) Here's how the chart looks this week: worldradiohistory.com/Archive-RandR/2000s/2000/RR-2000-02-11.pdf#page=42Anyone else notice that "Falls Apart" wasn't as heavy (loud) as it was 4 weeks ago? And I mentioned that Third Eye Blind were responsible for one outbreak of Odd Bullet Behavior this week. But not the only one - Christina Aguilera does this week what Eagle-Eye Cherry did in the 1999 show 3 weeks ago. That is, she backs into #1, as "What a Girl Wants" lost 20 spins. But Savage Garden lost triple digits, enough to cost them.

Is this another one of those dance remixes that gets forcibly grafted onto the countdown for its entire run (for "American Pie") because the metropolises (biggest of the biggest cities) insisted on it? This dance mix completely trashed American Pie - embarassing! The regular release followed the pace of the original by Don McLean so it's okSomehow I suspect that that third America's Top Hit ("The Sign") is a sneak preview for next week. As we all know, of course, it'd be the second of three #1 hits on Shadoe's AT40 rather than one of two. Too bad Casey contradicted previous history again on AT40, but oh well, sometimes he gets it straight.

Additional insight (fashionably late): * Will Smith’s “Freaking It!” (#39) was used as a challenge by Smith for hip-hop artists to “write one verse without a curse”. This shows that hip-hop music does not need swearing to be successful. *Madonna’s “American Pie” (#34) is a cover version of the 1971 Don McLean song she made for her movie The Next Best Thing. Unlike various other remixes on AT40, the Humpty Vission remix was a one week only appearance. *This would be the second appearance of Mandy Moore’s “Candy” (#33) on the chart, after falling off in back in November and re-entered 2 weeks prior. Guessing people missed her like candy, even though Mandy herself hated the song. *Amber’s “Sexual” holds at #29. It is a slightly cut version but better than only playing the first 1:30 of it (right, Mr. Dees?). This one also fell one 2 weeks prior, again! I think this just peaked at #42 on the previous week’s Hot 100 chart ( it was #1 on the dance charts 6 months prior). Sticking to Billboard, it would also reach it’s peak that very week at #26 on their Mainstream Top 40 charts. I bet it was one of those tracks that one dance-leaning CHR affiliate in Miami played constantly and word of mouth spread leading to some, if not all of their major affiliates adding the song to their spins, kinda similar origins to Sonique’s “It Feels So Good” (#19), hence why “Sexual” entered R&R late (12-5-99 on Pop). *Kasem tells a piece of Jessica Simpson writing love letters to her “future husband” (Nick Lachey?) at the age of 8, before even meeting him. Simpson recently also had a cheeky response to a lawsuit against Subway for allegedly using “fake tuna”, after which Subway responded in reference to her famous Chicken of the Sea gaff. *Lonestar’s “Amazed” moves up 8 to #21. This version used is a redone version for pop radio called “The Captain Mix”. *The late Alex Trebek appears on ads for Office Team. *Seems like Kasem used a tweaked version of Sugar Ray’s “Falls Apart” (#11). Sounded more acoustic. Could also be how it was presented/mastered.

Sonique I remember first surfacing late in 1999 - I don't remember exactly when, but December would make sense. But "Sexual" I never heard until it hit the chart. My station (again, not in a large market) gave Sonique good play and did play Amber some (but not as much). If anything, one song I don't remember hearing that much outside of the Weekly Top 40 was "Standing at the Edge of the Earth". My station played "Hey Leonardo" plenty, it was one of their top songs of 99. (Though FWIW, they moved from the Hot AC panel back to Pop during that song's run.) But "Standing"? Maybe once or twice? I vaguely remember there being two "versions", so to speak, of this - the one we heard had to be a radio edit that was issued later.

"(Shhhh) on the Radio" debuted on the entire R&R chart at #40 - though apparently, it wasn't that difficult to go straight into the countdown at this time, as that's the first of no less than five (!) songs in Hour 1 that debuted on the entire chart at #40 or higher. BUT, HERE'S THE CATCH: Just one of those, IIO's "Crapture", would reach the Top 20. Speaking of which, "Crapture" remains one of the most mystifying Top 40 hits in terms of its chart run - it rises briskly into the Top 20, only to more-or-less crash as soon as it got there, and dive for the exit even more quickly. Like...what the hell? It's a shame, because it's a great song. I tried requesting it at my junior prom, only for it to turn out that the DJs (who, IIRC, were last-minute replacements) had a very heavily 80s-and-some-90s collection and basically nothing else. (Keep in mind, in 2002, the 80s were decidedly not in vogue, especially not for a high school crowd.) But even though "Escape" was not going straight into the countdown (it was #46 the week before), it WAS this week's biggest spin-gainer, and the only one to gain four digits (+1081). ODD BULLET BEHAVIOR: "Song For the Lonely" backward bullets one notch to #37 while clinging to a tiny bullet (+35), while "A Woman's Worth" goes up one despite a triple-digit spin loss (-177)! Then, "Can't Fight the Moonlight" backward bullets one notch to #12 despite having the 7th-biggest spin gain on the entire chart (+494) - but, that's because she was pushed back by the song who had the biggest spin gain and was already in the countdown ("Can't Get You Out of My Head", up +861, second-biggest overall after Enrique). Finally, "U Got it Bad" goes back up one to #3 despite a loss of -481 - pushed back up by the song with the second-biggest spin loss ("Get the Party Started", down -880). Meanwhile, the song with the biggest spin loss this week was "Whenever, Wherever", with -933. THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS: Because how else would you describe this week's chart being a little more interesting once you look a little more closely? Before that, there's just the Biggest (upward) Move being just 5 notches and leapfrogged by the week's highest debut moving just over three times that much to come in at #30 ("Escape" was #46 the week before), then there's "The Distance" dropping 7, the week's two droppers being sent recurrent (from #33 and #21)...and that's it. Everything else moves no more than 4 notches in either direction. But, don't take my word for it: worldradiohistory.com/Archive-RandR/2000s/2002/RR-2002-02-15.pdf#page=63On the other hand, anyone else think that Hour 3 seemed like sort of a flashback to classic-era AT40? We had a Question Letter (exceedingly rare in this era), an obituary, and the second LDD asked Casey to pick a song for it. The obituary, incidentally, speaks to how the show's production timeline was able to get shorter and shorter as the years went on - Waylon Jennings passed away just 10 days prior (February 13) to this show's date.

Additional insight:
*Purell ads are back since one little squirt kills germs. Guessing they need more sales. Go with it!
*Cher was the oldest charting artist that week (aged 55), maybe overall during the Second Kasem Era?
*Gorillaz’ “19-2000” moves up 1 to 36. It is not the Soulchild Remix from the Ice Breakers TV ads (that appears later).
*Kasem made compilation albums called “America’s Top 10: Through The Years”, featuring 20 tracks from the 50s-90s on 5 discs (100 total). Only $70!
*Ludacris’ “Rollout” (#35) was the full track played and not a 10 second sample like a certain individual (let’s call him “RD”) did on his app. Of course, this was to please his 1000+ anti-hip hop affiliates.
*”R*pture (Tastes So Sweet)” (#34), the week’s highest mover, was iiO’s first and only Top 40 track. It appears on their 2005 album Poetica.
*”Insatiable” (#33) was Darren Hayes (of Savage Garden fame) first and only solo Top 40 track. A very Michael Jackson-esque track.
*Another Aussie, Natalie Imburugila moves up 2 to #32 with “Wrong Impression”. It would also be her last Top 40 track to date.
*”Hands Clean” (#24) was Alanis Morissette’s last Top 40 track to date.
*Kasem tells a piece on Jay-Z and R. Kelly’s first collaborative album, The Best of Both Worlds, and the artists’ experiences of recording the album. Kelly’s “The World’s Greatest” (made for the movie about late boxer Muhammad Ali), holds at #23.
*Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama” (#22) is based on the opening theme for the CBS soap opera The Young & The Restless.
*Toya’s “I Do” holds at #17. Peaking at #6 a little bit ago, it’s the longest charting track that week (29 weeks).
*Kasem answers a fan question regarding the 1965, 2000 and 2001 year end #1 tracks (Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh’s “Wooly Bully”, Vertical Horizon’s “Everything You Want” and Lifehouse’s “Hanging By a Moment”) that only peaked at #2 during their runs. I can’t say for “Wooly Bully” but I suspect part of the reason for the last two is because of Kasem’s use of that weird unpublished chart during October 2000-August 2001. “Hanging By a Moment” was also #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 of 2001 chart but another track that also did not hit #1 in 2000 was the top song for the Hot 100 chart of that year (Faith Hill’s “Breathe”). AT40 nor R&R wasn’t around in 1965 so Kasem must have been talking about Billboard’s Top 40 chart for “Wooly Bully”.
*City High’s “Caramel” holds at #15 for a 4th week. This version is the same as on it’s video, with excerpts of the Trackmasters remix preceding and during Eve’s verse. It is also their final Top 40 track as the trio broke up in 2003.
*Jennifer Lopez’ “Ain’t It Funny” moves up 1 to #13. Kasem played the more-popular Ja Rule version, whilst “RD” played the original version. Also, Kasem played the original version of LeAnn Rimes’ “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” (#12) while “RD” played Graham Stack’s Latin pop remix. I still don’t get why Kasem played the original version of Lopez’ last single “I’m Real” and not the more-popular Ja Rule Murder remix.
*Nickelback (aka ”The Band Everyone Loves to Hate”) reaches #1 for another week! Kasem also tells a piece on how the band reached #1 in both the US and their native Canada on the same week, similar to another track.

We needed more of that great Gobble Gobble Gobble Turkey Spam ad that was in the America's Top Hits segments. Also stations here played the remix of N'Sync's Girlfriend with Nelly & going back to last weeks poll Outkast Rocks Nickelback Sucks! I think that CD set may have been available individually unless I bought a broken up set one as I found the 80's one in a Goodwill for $2.50 I didn't know there was a 90's one.

I can’t say for “Wooly Bully” but I suspect part of the reason for the last two is because of Kasem’s use of that weird unpublished chart during October 2000-August 2001. No on both counts - they just had super-long chart runs. I...think? AT40 used R&R's year-end chart for 2001, but for 2000, Vertical Horizon would have been #1 anyway even with using theirs. And "Everything You Want" was gone by the time of the chart change (which happened rather late in the year anyway) in any case, so it's not like that was really much of a factor affecting year-end calculations anyway (aside from it left them with the impetus of calculating the chart themselves which leads to doing something stupid like leaving Toni Braxton out ). Also, Kasem played the original version of LeAnn Rimes’ “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” (#12) while “RD” played Graham Stack’s Latin pop remix. I don't recall ever hearing the remix on the radio here. It was always the original. *Nickelback (aka ”The Band Everyone Loves to Hate”) reaches #1 for another week! And it would be their last.

Speaking of affiliates, I noticed that my current home station WAYV (Atlantic City, NJ) was mentioned on Kasem’s “Great Radio Stations” plug a few times on separate shows. Now I’m pretty sure at the time WAYV was a Hot AC station and didn’t flip over to CHR until almost 10 years ago (2011) so this was a bit of a surprise/shocker to hear that WAYV carried AT40 during the Second Kasem Era (it did carry the Hot AC version of AT40 from December 2004-2009(?) and went back to the main CHR version). Wondered how many Hot AC stations carried AT40 instead of AT20 at that time (and how many people reacted to all those hip-hop/pop songs on their Hot AC station courtesy of Kasem).

I happen to have several shows from around that time and the remix was played on the 3/23/02 show, but that was apparently the only time it was played on there. The normal version was then used for the rest of its chart run, including the 2002 year-end. Coincidentally in that same segment, they played that remix of "Can't Fight The Moonlight" that was also mentioned on here recently. They do just play the remix on SiriusXM's Pop2K channel.

The information dump on this week's show will be delayed. I recorded this morning but wasn't listening, as my sleep/awake time has been all out of whack. Now, trying to type it up on the airing that's on now, I just had everything I'd had typed wiped out - and now I'm in no mood to continue. So it will probably have to come later.

Additional insight (short one this week):
*Shirley Manson and her band Garbage's “Special” falls to #38 after debuting at #37 the last week.
*Deborah Cox’ “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” drops 4 to #34 (after moving up 9 to #30 the last week, it would actually then peak at #30) It was Cox’ last Top 40 hit to date. I’m actually surprised that it’s not the Hex Hector remix nor the hybrid version that morphs it to that remix towards the end being played here (and I bet their biggest affiliates played either of the latter two versions).
*”Run” (#33) was Collective Soul’s last Top 40 track to date. They would later deem success on the Hot AC charts.
*B-Witched's “C’est La Vie” holds at #32. The most “Irish” track I heard. It was also the group’s only AT40 track, as their follow-up (“Rollercoaster”) only peaked at #45 on R&R.
*McMann tells a piece about the Louisiana Purchase and how it doubled the size of the U.S. by adding 13 new states including Louisiana, the home of Britney Spears, the young lady with the track “(Hit Me) Baby One More Time” (#1). The asking price: $15M ($18/sq mile = total 820K sq miles).

Bummer, missing your write ups! They add tons to the forum and discussion. Hopefully you have not decided to stop !
