Hi Jeff,
Just finished to listen to my recording of MERC from jan 14, 1978 off WRFZ.
I have a question : Where can i put " Our Love " by Natalie Cole ( # 99 in Cashbox of that week ) ?
It was aired just after " Gladys Knight at the end of hour 2 and wasn't listed on your playlist published on the facebook page .
Thank you

That's the right spot. Must've forgot it on the playlist. It was the Hour 2 "optional extra"

Fixed on the playlist.
1-23-88 this week. A Cashbox Chart.
64-June 1970 is always Billboard.
July 1970 to 1989 is Cashbox.
Year ends and specials are Billboard.

Many thanks Jeff.
Now it's clear to me , all shows during the period of AT 40 are Cashbox just to avoid to have the same chart ( Billboard ).
I wonder why there are no charts shows - among all the many i know, using Record World ?
Billboard / Cashbox / Radio & Records / Gavin are the ones used to my knowledge.

I had decided just before we started airing Joe's show to do this because otherwise it would be all 60's and dates there was a special from the AT40 years.
I wanted to be able to do the 70's and 80's more than that so I started doing Cashbox only (unless I state otherwise for whatever reason.
Joe and I try to keep away from the same years as we have the other's schedule. At least a month apart if possible for the 70's and 80's.
He also will do more 60's now that he knows there would be no "competition".
Of course he doesn't do many stories like I like to do but still. No sense in repeating each other's stuff if we can help it.

I wonder why there are no charts shows - among all the many i know, using Record World ? Billboard / Cashbox / Radio & Records / Gavin are the ones used to my knowledge. I know of two countdown shows that used the Record World charts during the 1970's & early 1980's before they stopped publishing in 1982. The shows were: 1)The National Album Countdown hosted by Humble Harv (the first DJ to fill in for Casey). The show was a Top 30 LP countdown; and I recall hearing a few shows back then but have been unable to find any recently. 2)The Nashville Record Review hosted by Al Risen. The show was only a Top 10 Country countdown. I have one copy of the show but don't know how long the show lasted after Record World stopped their charts. Two of the year end countdowns I did for the 1970's (1974 & 1976) I used a chart based on Record World's weekly rankings. By looking at a few of Record World's year end issues you can see that they did not produce a full year end chart (100 positions); I am not sure why. I do know that Record World's charts were considered to be the 'least reliable (or respected)' especially near the end. There are quite a few instances where songs made the Top 10 in Record World only that peaked much lower on Billboard & Cash Box. 'DJ' Joe Cantello Cash Box Countdown

Joe, Harv wasn't the first to gill in for Casey. He filled in in 1974. Someone filled in for the first time in 1971. Dick Clark filled in on 3-25-72.

Good thing Dick Clark filled in so early as he gave them the idea to voicetrack Casey. I could hear Dick now...."there is no way I'm reading this over and over again, it would be better to do it this way!" Think how long the show would have been to do if he had never guest hosted lol.

Humble Harv was not the first guest announcer on AT40 but he did host a countdown show based on the Record World LP chart. By the way, a great read is Rob Durkee's book about the history of AT40--'American Top 40 The Countdown of the Century'.

FYI, you may want to try your local libraries. I actually bought one on line that was from a library through Amazon. I believe it was somewhere between $30 and $60 if my memory serves me correct. Anyway, you may even find one that you could check out at your local library and they may be able to find one for sale through the library systems. I just searched my local libraries online in Cocoa, Fl and found 2 libraries within 20 miles had copies...

It goes along the lines that Dick Clark was surprised how they were doing the show but Casey didn't want it to sound "canned". They got a feel of how it could be done by recording the voice and mixing it in later. They would have one reel of Casey's consecutive voice tracks, edit that tape, then mix it in with the jingles, and records.

Why, in Jeff's MERC shows, the bonus track at the end of each hour is played after the annoucement of the end of the hour ( i hope i am clear : when hour 1 is finished , just after some intro of station's shows , a bonus track is played before the beginning of the next hour ).
Why this bonus track is not included in the hour aired ?
Maybe for technical reasons or to fit with the time slot ?

It is the hourly extra like they do with rebroadcasts of AT40. I was doing it that way before and liked the placement, so I have kept it that way.
Then we fill the hour with random music. USUALLY, but not always, from the same decade as the show we are doing. We try to play more lost material that way!

Just an FYI, the shows we air on WBME are older episodes mixing original shows we did on here and ones done on Rochester Free Radio. On here we are just going in original date order. (Currently in 1967) We will progress to the end and aside from a few rebroadcasts of specials, go back to the beginning of what we've done and add in shows done in the meantime. On WRFZ, we do a date that's close to the day it airs. Here is our current schedule for WRFZ from now until the end of March. 1-29-17: January 25, 1969 2-5-17: February 3, 1968 2-12-17: February 14, 1970 2-19-17: February 20, 1982 2-26-17: February 26, 1972 3-5-17: March 8, 1975 3-12-17: March 12, 1983 3-19-17: March 18, 1967 3-26-17: Top 100 Hits Of The Beatles: Together & Apart (Part 1) The Facebook page also has this information. Thank you for the information Jeff. I will give a "like" to the facebook page.
i really appreciate in your shows the introduction of songs bubbling under the top 40 , for an european listener like me it's the opportunity to discover songs i never heard before...47 years after .

Very cool as well. Just an FYI. many older shows that air on WBME are only 3 hours. The ones I do on WRFZ and 1970 onwards are 4 hours. Just to let you know.
Also 1964-July 4 1970 are Billboard. After that most will be Cashbox unless its a week Casey did a special.
All of my specials are based on Billboard.

I will not be able to do a playlist for the show from Feb 14, 1970 since my recording failed. I don't think there'll be a rerun on WRFZ, just too bad.
